| Bags in rumen | |
| Suspending bags | |
| When suspending bags in a cow's rumen, we use the 2C cannula with the regular stopper. Insitu bags are placed in a mesh, zippered laundry bag weighted with metal nuts. The bag is tied to a string which hangs out of the cannula between the stopper and ring and is weighted with a large flat washer. The string with washer does not bother the cow and keeps the laundry bag from going too deep into the rumen. The samples are easy to retrieve from the laundry bag and you don't run the risk of losing any bags in the rumen. | |

| Suspending bags inside the rumen | |
| (Note: Emily ordered the #1EZ with the "U" bolt on the inside rather than the outside of the stopper. We have also put the "U" bolt on both the inside and outside of the stopper.) Hi Pat, The stoppers you made with the d ring on the inside are a great success. It means our cows are allowed to go out of their stalls with bags inside them as there is nothing external for them to catch accidentally. We have used the new stoppers with 60 bags attached on 2 strings and 4 metal shackles so they have survived quite a weight. Best wishes, Emily | |

| Stop those nasty flys! | |
| Pat's Secret Weapon | |
| My secret weapon against flys is bacon grease! With a gloved hand, smear bacon grease all over the animal's face especially around their eyes. Be generous -- it won't bother their eyes. Also rub their belly and around the cannulae. Put on open sores too. Use on saddle sores (on your horse -- not your cow!). Bacon grease works at least as well as fly spray, costs nothing, and you get a great breakfast! | |

| Surgery | |
| Dairy cows | |
| Use #4C prior to using #1C in dairy cows. Make a 4" diameter fistula, but insert the 3" #4C cannula after surgery. After about two week, replace the #4C with the #1C or any 4" cannula. This allows the fistula to heal without stretching. | |

| After surgery | |
| After surgery, during the healing process, we use a product called Aluspray to coat the healing fistula after cleaning. It keeps the area clean and protected as it heals. Works great. | |

| The Blue Mat Tip | |
| Leaking or Losing the Cannulae | |
| If you have a leaking cannula due to a fistula that is too large or not perfectly round, try making your own washer from a blue mat available in the sporting goods department of stores such as Wal Mart. Cut an oblong washer about 8" by 12". Cut a 4" diameter center hole. Remove the cannula and place the blue mat washer on the inside of the rumen. Replace the cannula. The blue mat will pull into the fistula and help stop the leakage. You can also use the mat to raise the cannula if it is rubbing on the outside of the animal. You have lots of material to experiment with! | |
